We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Henry Nowak and our thoughts are first and foremost with Henry’s family, friends and all those who knew and loved him during this incredibly difficult time. This is a heartbreaking loss, and we know that members of various communities throughout our city are feeling the pain of this tragedy deeply, and as councillors we share that sense of heartbreak and sorrow.
At moments such as these, it is important that we resist any attempt to politicise a tragedy. Instead, this devastating event should serve as a stark reminder of why community cohesion, mutual understanding and respect are so important now more than ever. Southampton is a city where people from many different backgrounds live, work and thrive together, and it is vital that we continue to stand together in the face of such terrible grief and uncertainty.
We believe it is right that the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is carrying out a thorough investigation into the events that transpired, and it is essential that the circumstances surrounding this senseless tragedy are fully understood, both to provide answers to those affected and to help identify any lessons that could prevent a similar tragedy from ever happening again. We also recognise that the actions of one individual should never be used to stigmatise an entire faith or community, and it is right that violent knife crimes of this magnitude are punished to the fullest extent of the law.
As a city, we must continue to support one another, allow the proper processes to take place, and continue working towards building stronger relationships between our various communities. Southampton Labour councillors will continue working with our Safe City partners, community organisations, local MPs, universities and local communities to support community cohesion, provide reassurance, and support those affected by this tragedy.
Our thoughts remain with Henry’s family and loved ones, and with everyone across Southampton who has been affected by this tragic loss.
